Texas Longhorns Came Strong But Now Just Staying Alive

November 18, 2016 By admin Leave a Comment

Back in early September the Texas Longhorns reeled off two wins and cracked the Top 25. Expectations were high but now they are fighting to stay alive for a bowl berth.

Back on Track

Sunday, September 4th of this year the Longhorns welcomed the Fighting Irish to Austin, Texas and history was made. That’s right, third-year head coach Charlie Strong started a freshman at quarterback in a Texas home opener for the first time in 70 years. Shane Buechele got the assignment and delivered a rousing 50-47 double overtime victory over Notre Dame.

Those who backed the Longhorns in their college football picks were rewarded as Texas came into their opener as four-point home underdogs and not only got the cover but also proved to be a money line winner of +160 for those bettors who eschewed the points and wagered that Texas would win the game outright. Expectations were soaring in Austin and a renewed interest in the resurgent Longhorns football program spread like wildfire.

But the euphoria didn’t last for long. Texas went on to drop their next three games and were suddenly a 2-3 squad with their hopes of a major bowl in the future suddenly dimmed. However, Charlie Strong and his crew of Texas Longhorns came strong and are headed into this week’s matchup against West Virginia with a 5-4 record. Though a major bowl is highly unlikely, there is a chance that the Horns could end the season at 8-4 and get a chance at winning their first postseason game since their 31-27 victory over Oregon State in the 2012 Alamo Bowl.

Longhorns Cashing for Bettors

Though Texas is not a contender for the College Football Playoff this season they certainly are in position to contend for a major bowl. Their destiny hinges on the results of the final three games of the season. But what bettors know about this year’s edition is that they have been a good bet in terms of their ATS (against the spread) covers. The Longhorns have covered the college football odds in six of their nine games this season but have a major challenge this Saturday against their Big 12 Rivals, the 7-1 Mountaineers of West Virginia.

The Texas Longhorns came strong again after losing three in a row but must continue their winning ways if they are to make noise in the postseason. However, if Texas nosedives and drops all their remaining games then the team would be excluded from the bowl season and be in the midst of rebuilding once again. But don’t count them out and if you want to jump from the sidelines and into the games then place your bets at a premier offshore sportsbook and enjoy the college football season even more!
