What’s going on?

It’s eerily quiet now. Abbas’ compound still appears to be in Fatah hands, but there is no fighting. We’re speculating that perhaps there are negotiations of some sort.

On another note, the media is making a lot of Abbas’ announcement to disolve the unity government and declare a state of emergency. Seems like a futile gesture and way too little too late, but will perhaps pave the way for a widespread crackdown on Hamas in the West Bank.

Also, Hamas TV broadcast disturbing and gruesome footage of Fatah commander Samih al Madhoun, famed for ruthlessly confronting Hamas in northern Gaza, being dragged into the streets, shot repeatedly and the stomped by a swarm of people.

Don’t count out Abbas’s move. I wonder if, in a sense, the PA didn’t just shed Gaza the way Israel did.

Where does this leave former Fateh sympathizers in Gaza? Even if they are not politicians or political figures, might they be in danger? Good reporting, Charles, esp. chilling to hear the audio Telegraph posted from you at the demonstration.
