New post, overlooking Gaza City, fighting everywhere

We’re in our new digs out of Abbas’ compound just in time. We’re on the 14th floor rooftop of an apartment block not far from the Palestinian parliament with a great view of the city all around. Welcome to “Hamastan” as the Israelis have apparently taken to calling Gaza.

Gunfire is ringing out all around. There was just a huge explosion a few blocks away. A police headquarters next door to the parliament and the National Security Forces HQ was blown up and all that remained from what we could see was a giant dust cloud. A small caravan of two jeeps, a gun mounted pickup truck and an APC, apparently belonging to Fatah, retreated up the street firing back toward the site of the explosion.

Hamas displays the spoils of war from the captured preventative security headquarters, proof, it says of Israeli and American collusion with Fatah.

To the north we can see smoke rising from Sudaniya, the site of the General Intelligence headquarters. To the south, Tel al Hawa, which Hamas militants have taken and apparently renamed “Tel al Islam” is similarly smoking. Al Jazeera is replaying images of Hamas fighters inside the Preventative Security headquarters at Tel al Hawa. They’re displaying Israeli license plates, bullet proof vests, and weapons, proof, the gunmen say, that Israel and America has been arming Fatah.

From a special forces officers we interviewed in Abbas’ compound minutes before we fled, we heard brutal reports of Hamas executing surrendering security officers in the streets. We just spoke with the owner of the flat we just left beside Abbas’ compound and he sounds petrified. There is heavy fighting all around him. AP reports RPGs have already started hitting the presidential compound.
